United States of eBay Lobbies D.C.
On September 21st and 22nd, 2005, A City Discount was among twenty-six eBay sellers who traveled from all across the country to Washington, D.C. to participate in the third annual United States of eBay Small Business Summit. Just like the film classic, Mr. Smith Goes to Washington, these small business entrepreneurs brought their American homespun wisdom and real life experiences to the meetings with their Congressional representatives. Marty and Lindsey Stack, from A City Discount's executive team attended this excitement.
Bill Cobb, President of eBay North America, and John Donahoe, President of eBay Brand, both welcomed the sellers and thanked them for their critical participation in the Summit.
The first full day of meetings began with a legislative breakfast featuring Congresswoman Anna Eshoo (D-CA). An informational session on the federal remote sales tax legislation and lobbying followed, and two eBay Power Sellers shared their past lobbying experiences. Then it was up to Capitol Hill to meet with key Members of the Senate and the House of Representatives.
At a lunch at the historic Sewall-Belmont House between meetings, Senator Chuck Hagel (R-NE) addressed the group and emphasized both the growing footprint eBay sellers are leaving in the small business community nationwide and the importance of sharing their experiences with their Congressional members.
The eBay sellers who attended the Summit were well received on Capitol Hill. Nine seller groups met with over 37 congressional offices. Ten of these meetings were with key Members of the Senate Finance Committee, and many meetings were held with Members who are swing votes on eBay's #1 federal issue, the proposed remote sales tax legislation. The Senators and Representatives who met with the groups met with were interested in the unique experience of eBay small business owners.
Due to the success of the summit, preparations are already being made for the fourth annual United States of eBay Small Business Summit in March 2006.
